Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

That the pronouncements about no parkrun doubles on NYD seems another heavy-handed top down micromanagement decision.

I've never done a NYD parkrun, and would be highly unlikely to do a double even if I could, but to prevent others from doing so should they so wish seems churlish to me.

It might be that given its NYD, some sites might not be accessible at 9am, but would have been at 10.

If people want to do doubles, let them have their fun. Don't see any issue with it.

I think the extreme minority of people who drive like morons between event a and event b is so small as to make it irrelevant.

If you want a Sanction, then they could simply be banned from parkrun.

The dangerous driving between events was one thing (not sure it was a minority), but the numbers were also becoming untenable at a lot of places.

As for imposing the sanction that you have suggested, how on earth do you think it would be possible to monitor/identify which individuals were driving dangerously between events?

Impossible in practice to ban someone from parkrun regardless of jenny's valid point.

It is a sign of these times but optics is everything and the minimal chance of a car full of parkrunners causing an accident rushing between events is something that they need to avoid

Interesting. And good questions.

How were they identified in the first place? They must have been for it to have been identified as a problem (beyond purely anecdotal evidence)

How are you sure it wasn't a minority?

I'm also interested to hear that it caused high numbers in places unable to deal with them. Was this not considered given the move in start time?

How do parkruns cope when there are unexpected cancellations of other local parkruns and so there are a flow of people from those to the parkrun that stays open?

If you've not done a NYD double fozzy you might not appreciate the throngs that risk overwhelming some of the events, particularly the later starting ones.

I suspect the real concern wasn't about dangerous driving between etc, it was more the simple over-crowding reasons causing problems for landowners and event teams, particularly at the very popular "doubles"; on the courses, in the car parks, in the funnels etc.

Yes, it would be possible to point to the dangerous driving too, but I suspect a bigger real concern (if raod traffic was your concern) would be drivers on the roads at 8am unaware of themselves being over the legal limit after a few glasses late into the night on NYE and that will continue with 9am NYD parkruns anyway.

"but optics is everything"

Yes this was my point really. It's top-down micromanagement decision based on, at best, anecdotal evidence and hearsay. From what I can glean.

Doesn't affect me either way and I'm not that bothered, but is emblematic of the ongoing drift that's been happening for a while (and tends to happen with many things to be fair) that it's all about protecting the brand.

Larkin - fair point, although those things *can* be managed.

But doesn't really affect me either way.

Just seems a shame.

Yes, i assumed it was numbers mainly. Lee on Solent had about 1000 runners and volunteers combined and its a sea front shared with many others on a new year's day 2020 (it was 1030am I think, so the later time). Wonderful management by volunteers but it wasn't a good look.

In terms of parkruns coping when numbers swell, that's just something they deal with. But Nostell 2019 at 10:30am for example went from typically 200 to 645 on NYD (2020 they decided to operate at the same time as other local events to avoid becoming part of a double ISTR). That sort of swelling just doesn't occur if one locally gets cancelled.

I 100% agree the dangerous driving thing is likely at most an imagined peril; we can all see the potential for it, but just because it is possible doesn't mean it was truly an issue.

Mostly there was plenty of time to get between events, and it's only the distant doubles that there was really a risk of someone haring along at 70mph in a 30mph zone.
