In their note about why doubles ended, it was "long distances" that they quoted as being the risk factor for drivers; and I think we can all agree that in general the further you drive, the bigger the risk of an accident through sheer "normality".
The rest of the note said (my boldings):- "We also see that very often there is a funneling effect at the second event. With more participants than usual on 1 January but with fewer events to go to as some events choose not to host an additional event, the result is significantly higher attendances at many events (sometimes 5-6 times a typical average attendance), which puts pressure on the volunteer team, has caused issues of late with landowners, and creates much busier car parks, cafes and paths. This is compounded by some events taking place later in the morning than usual, resulting in more congestion and conflict with other park users. For these reasons, we have taken the decision to remove the option for New Year’s Day doubles. We will still allow events to host an additional parkrun on 1 January, at their usual start time."

Ah I see, a 300% increase is indeed significant.
Suggests though that parkrun would be more popular if were run at 10am rather than the antisocial 9am though

Possibly, but also the trend was for several local events to run the 9am version, and then open a smaller number of 10:30s etc. So by their nature the 10:30s had their usual crowd plus the doublers. Plus those people for whom getting up at 8am on NYD was a struggle!

Having never done a double I would also say that it was really only possible for the faster parkrunners - so not really fitting in the 'inclusive' ethos of parkrun

Not really, depended heavily on the locations

I have RDed at the first parkrun on NYD, done close-down and cycled to the second parkrun and got there before it started. It was possible
However, we got 600 people on NYD which is 3-4x our normal numbers, this is why they are not a good thing. We coped, but it wasn't pretty

Not really - I've done doubles after taking over 40 minutes to get round the first one.

If I remember correctly we had up to 4xx (after running out once before when PSH visited) but we did run out and resorted to writing numbers on peoples hand with a sharpie.

One of our club's runner's second result was removed when they ran two different ones on Xmas day a couple of years back.
One NYD our first run was at 8:30 and the second not until 10:00, so we comfortably got there. Some speedsters from another club ran from their first run to the same second run. They ended up running a good half marathon in total in distance.
