It was getting a bit unsustainable here. Peckham would be on at 9am then for 10am there was a choice of three or four - so of course Peckham was swamped. I've never run a NYD parkrun but have directed a few times. I like the idea of a Boxing Day run.

sallykate - you only need to wait until 2026 š, but I agree - that may be a better day than Christmas Day!

Hellywobs there are Junior parkruns on Boxing Day, so volunteers can go there if they want. It will be interesting to see what happens next year when Christmas Day is on a Sunday

SK not quite the same, but in the midlands we have had visit us (in Sept not the after longest day) a gang who do 8.5 different parkrun courses for charity on a Saturday, including one official one at 9am. It takes a coach hire and a lot of planning as well as being a really long day of stop start running.
The doubles that Iāve done have always been close together geographically but I totally agree being an ED in recent years they were becoming too much in terms of sheer numbers and issues relating to that.
That said last double I did on NYD 2020 was special as I got proposed to at the end - which was nice š But that could have happened any old Saturday really š

I'm clearly outnumbered here but I feel that parkrun is ignoring the elephant in the room. I know there were a small number of events which got vastly more runners on NYD than they will ever get on a normal Saturday but more events were simply getting a similar number of runners that they then got in the rest of January, or should expect to get in future years. They call it unsustainable on NYD but why is it sustainable 52 Saturdays a year? Yes Lee on the Solent got nearly 1000 on NYD, but then got over 700 on a regular Saturday, still way too many for that course. History shows it would have just got bigger attendances on Saturdays in the future if things had continued without Covid's influence.
Eastville got 941 NYD 2019, but then over 700 the next Saturday and 785 on a regular January in 2020, not a big difference. Covid saved parkrun's bacon and gave them a bit of breathing space but if their only solution to overcrowding is to cancel events they're royally screwed in the long term...IMO. I guess we are living in a different world now but I can't see numbers staying so low forever.

Doing NYD doubles was quite popular up here in Aberdeen as we have a few local ones and it was agreed amongst them who would host the early and who would host the late one. A lot of runners would run from HH down in time to do the beach.
Never done a double myself as I like a drink at Hogmanay and never risked the early driving.

I did my first in Ireland this year and my cousin was taking me. Heās quite laid back and said heād pick me up at 08:50 for a 8 mile journey. I was panicking but didnāt realise they started at 9:30. When we got there the start is about a 5 min jog and I was concerned said we should jog on but he was happy they wouldnāt start until everyone was ready.

There's a difference between organically growing to a big number (whatever is considered capacity), and doubling from the week before because lots of Kenny Keenos want another notch on their t-shirt belt.
However yes you are right, parkrun was (is) outgrowing many of its locations and ultimately the growth is unsustainable in many locations - this has traditionally been countered by opening more parkruns in the locality. We saw this as a number of locations were able to reassess the permission after the covid break and ultimately haven't returned - under the cover of covid, but essentially because any benefit of parkrun was outweighed by the nuisance.

Traffic permitting, Jesmond Dene for two or maybe three of us tomorrow as we do the Cheshire to Tyne & Wear trip to collect the eldest from Uni. I'm ok with the 5am start, not sure whether my 19yo who has volunteered to come with me will be quite so happy at that time in the morning!
