Thanks mascott, it's been a valuable conversation if it's made even just the people in this thread think a bit more confidently.
I'm a lot more aware of the theory behind it thru conversations like this!

apparently most incidents requiring AED intervention occour around the start and finish areas. which is reassuring as my worry as a RD is that it happens 2.5km away on our out n back course... even that will take our fastest runners 8-9 minutes to get back to pick up the AED and same again to get to the patient.
We also have access issues for emergency vehicles at some parts of the course.

We would also have access difficulties for emergency vehicles around the course at both Workington and Keswick, which are out-and-back along footpaths.
This has been a prompt for me to find out where the nearest AEDs are. Let's just say that I hope nobody collapses.

Our AED is portable so when I RD I wear it, using the shoulder strap. The stats show that incidents are likeliest at the start and finish but ours happened at the furthest point away. One of the core team now leaves his bike at the finish area so we can bike the AED at least part of the way to all parts of the course.

LD, great way of doing things. At Woodley because we are lapped and we have 2 AEDs (one at the sports centre and 1 at the Oakwood Centre) I reckon you are only 1 minute away from 1 at any point on the course but if further then having it handy and a quick way to get to the incident is a great idea.

When we had our training using one we were never told about razors, puddles Etc. I suppose even if you were about 8 - 9 minutes away if there is someone already there with the patient using the compression on chest with hands is better than nothing surely.

Maz and LG, is there not an AED at the beach leisure centre? Grabbing that would've quicker if they were at the far end of the beach?

Don't quote me on that but I seem to remember there's a AED box just outside the door from my days of running past there. I think it's a council thing to have them available at leisure centres and the like.
