Going back to the AED comments. Yes they're brilliant and I think all parkruns should have one or access to one in a hurry
However, I had my first aid re-certification training yesterday and "playing" with the AED made me think of the following points for this thread (apologies if these were mentioned ages ago, I haven't been reading this thread very long):

If your parkrun has one - or access to one - make sure several of the regulars know how to use it - Yes they do talk you through the process - but things like avoiding/removing necklaces, removing underwired bras and even shaving a really hairy person aren't mentioned!
Nor is not standing in the same puddle as the casualty - drying a wet casualty and keeping the rain off with a brolly

The pads can give nasty burns if they're not fully/firmly attached

Some AEDs are fully automatic and give the shock without you needing to press a button - so you need to be very aware that everyone close is clear/not in the same puddle etc.

How to arrange the pads differently if the casualty has a scar that might be an internal pacemaker or defib.

If your parkrun has one, then it might make sense to have a kitbag which includes a pair of scissors, maybe a razor, a towel and also a protective mask for cpr with it.

Interesting points Rosehip, silly question do you really have time to shave a person chest if their heart has stopped beating?

you don't have time not to UC - if the pads can't make contact, they're useless

Bear in mind that the person is technically dead. The AED will not function if it detects a heart rhythm. There's nothing you can do with the AED that risks them being more dead. The risks from burning and the like a far lower than the risk of doing nothing.

Those of us that bought AEDs via parkrun's preferred supplier should have received a prep kit with the scissors, razor, mask and such like.

but if they're burning the casualty they're not doing their job and the user is much less likely to have another go ......

That's good to know DG - it seems that schools' preferred suppliers don't!
