Evening from a warm Lisbon. Lots of hill work, walking; short run and walk breaks. Re races, I'm putting on cross country on Saturday; even that has many more rules and regs than it used to have. Headphones in road races: a definite no; a woman was hit by a loose horse in a local half marathon a few years ago. If she hadn't been wearing headphones she would have heard the shouts to get out of the way. Could have been much worse. Wordle in five |

Woman hit by horse is definitely the post of the day! TS maybe why club races are disappearing and the big boys taking over. Such a shame but seems like a steady slide. |

Yup, similar here. The 'local' Run Orewa event on Sunday was put on by "one of the largest independent mass-participation event organisers" in New Zealand (their words). Primarily (or all?) running/run & walk events. Seem mostly smaller-medium size events (~1,000 - 5,000 type) and mostly in the Auckland region. At least they acknowledge local clubs. Night Ninja members got a 50% discount on the Run Orewa event as it was treated as a "Ninja home event". Entry cost was quite reasonable (NZ$32.50 after discount, or about GBP16.00). For other events, their club member discount is only 10% though. |

Oops, should have said that was the entry cost for the 10k event. Would also have been a bit cheaper (NZ$30) if I hadn't left it until two weeks beforehand to register.

Sitting in a bar overlooking the sea in Cascais, recovering from my 19 minute run in 26 degrees. All good. Wordle in five. |

@alehouse - hadn't realised you had slipped out of the country- Lisbon very hilly, enjoy! Hopefully you have no road closures to negotiate for your xcountry! @OO61 - that is precisely why. The costs of a road closure or a temporary restriction, plus all the other organisational issues that have to be resolved, even with volunteers doing all the leg work make it very difficult/impossible to stage a small race as the entry costs won't pay the expenses. Most local authorities won't help either despite "their commitment to sport and participation for all" and similar bullocks @NZD - yup that's the way it is going/gone here as well. The entry for the best organised localish HM - The Brass Monkey in York - held in January (hence the name) and with a field limit of 1750 is £29 plus an extra £9 if you want a tee shirt. It is always oversubscribed but they have to limit the field because the road restriction order only covers a Sunday morning for a few hours - there are so many folk driving to church at that time on rural roads!!! I went to the Hash last evening as it was a significant birthday for one member and I slunk round the course using short cuts to suit my walking/ slow trot pace to do 2.8 miles with a HR of 81/111 so barely alive! Garmin rated it as unproductive Similar exercised this morning but forgot to switch Garmin off so my effort improved considerably when I drove to get blood tests done |

alehouse Sitting is bar overlooking the ocean after your run sound delightful. @Torque Steer Keeping HR low is marker of success during the rehab process. I jogged for 40 min this morning. I covered somewhat more than 5K. That completes my planned 10 week modified C25K jog/walk programme. It has been a success insofar as my knee has been quite happy. I have at least arrested the decline of my fitness. I am contemplating the next stage. My main goal is to be fit enough to jog on the fells. Most of my recent jog/walk sessions have been on fairly easy terrain. The next phase will include some more demanding terrain. |
