Flatlander
There is some evidence that reading/close screenwork in childhood while the eye still has some growing to do may contribute to short sight.

In addition to that, some research has shown that too much reading by school children can lead to some eye problems, not by the reading itself but due to the reading being done indoors and so the reader ends up with low levels of Vitamin D which is involved in the development of the eye ncbi.nlm.nih.gov and several other researches.

Is that when it looks like a dried-up river bed, Flatlander?

Do you mean the Geographic Tongue, Dio?
It is a patchy discolouration of the tongue, with lots of pink/red areas mixed up with normal coloured areas. en.wikipedia.org

I often get geographic tongue, have always suspected its linked to my coeliac disease (wikipedia agrees that it may be). It sometimes looks quite bizarre.

3M - at mt last check up, my optician had replaced the puff test with something else, non invasive and a different way of measuring the pressure.
He said the pressure test was always a bit iffy - especially with patients who blinked a lot as it was coming. (I think he meant patients like me)

I get free eye tests as I'm over 40 and my mum had glaucoma (or something similar).

I've worn glasses since my late 20s when I told my friend her TV was shite and needed changing as the picture quality was awful. Everyone else in the room begged to differ so off to the optician I went and that was that.

My cataract ops done back in May were successful and have without being dramatic more than likely saved my sight; vision in my right eye particularly was deteriorating badly and quickly

Of course, eye tests are free for the over 60s too (in England, at least!).

I'll say it again though... take your prescription away and order your glasses on-line. My 2 pairs (both varifocal, one photochromic pair, one "clear" pair, both with lenses coated to do everything imaginable) combined cost me £87. (You do have to pick your time to benefit from special deals to get those prices, I admit!)
And I have a fairly horrible prescription. Same sort of standard in SpecSavers - £300, in my actual opticians where I went for the test, £400+! Even the "buy one get one free" options elsewhere were £250 or so.

Thanks, 3M. I'll remember that when I next need glasses.

I've just bought 2 pairs of glasses online for £85 Inc p&p. Distance ones, designer frames and ultra thin lenses and ones for reading with standard lenses. Used same company for glasses for hubby and contact lenses for years now.
