Woodwork: First project was a toast rack, basically a piece of deal plank, french polished of all things, 12 holes drilled into it and lengths of thin flexible cane (like you'd use for weaving a basket) inserted to form arches to separate the slices. Second was a crocodile - piece of 2x2 square post, turned into a rough cone shaped round by cutting and filing (we weren't allowed to touch the lathes, ever!) and a deeper groove for the neck, a slit for the mouth, and 4 little dowels for legs. Frome memory, mine wobbled. Both pieces of creativity were "lost" at some point. Thank goodness. I did have the perspex letter opener I made in the next year until my teens. Oh, and we made fish pie. Several times, from memory. |

The first thing I had to do when I started my apprenticeship was make my toolbox. Mine was a lot heavier than planned because there was only thicker gauge steel sheet left by the time I got to the stores. It was very shonky.

jelly 's post on the previous page My mum still has a bit of cross stitch I did at primary school, a tray cloth. It must have happened in some kind of rudimentary art class, similar to the classes where you cut a potato in half, carved a pattern in the cut surface, dunked it into a coloured fluid and stamped it onto a piece of paper so you could see what you had done. |

Did basket weaving and made a bread basket that my mum still uses. In needlework I made a cushion which is still in the spare room although most of the decorative stitching has broken! HE focused on pastries!

I've been inspired by the folks on here to send away for a poo stick for the first time. I got a letter in the post this morning giving me the all clear with no further investigation required at this time. Thanks to everyone for giving me the kick up the backside I needed to get it done.

I also have an old reel to reel tape recorder from mum's loft and no way of getting it going. I'm going to persist finding help with that one as there is a very slim chance it has a recording of my grandma's voice on one of the tapes and I've never heard that as she died before I was born. Mum still has theirs, it’s currently with a local independent electronics store, thinking about it it’s been there a while - they are trying to get it going for similar reasons - we know there is a recording of my sister’s christening that has mum’s grandfather on it amongst others. We did find an online company who would take the tapes and record them for us - will chase that if the repair doesn’t work. Needlework at school was quite practical, but I was glad nana had already taught me how to sew as I joined halfway through the second form and they made me catch up. We had to embroider our initials on our lab coats the first week, sew little cases for our latin books - which were more like a set of pamphlets and then in year 2 we had to make our summer dresses for the summer term. |
