First thing we made in woodwork was a spice rack. However in 1980 Sheffield for most of us spice was sweets not something you cook with. Many of us had something to put our Mars bars and Marathons with. The blackboard rubber was a favourite at my school. You got good reflex’s avoiding one thrown at you. |

My dad remembers the tin bath in front of the fire, his dad was a builder so it got quite mucky. My mum remembers having a marble slab in the larder, no fridge, copper on the boiler, the milkman's horse eating everyone's roses... Also the tinned food that had been stashed before the war. I remember her parents' meat safe outside the back door to store veg, as their lovely 50s fridge was quite small but did have an icebox. When we stayed with them the milk came everyday, and we walked to the village maybe every other day for bread, meat/fish, veg and the co-op. And we took the bag of crusts to feed the ducks on the way. Mum also remembers waking up & seeing her grandmother standing in the garden looking at the French windows on the lawn after a flying bomb went down the road |

I made a pair of trousers but I got the measurements wrong. I remember reading the report card where it said the trousers would have probably been a perfect fit for Cyril Smith.

My brother's private school (scholarship) still used chalk, board rubber & gym shoe; the ultimate punishment was the slipper from the headmaster (very progressive, they'd given up the cane). He's 54.

I made a keyring from thermoplastic, a desk calendar from sheet metal & wooden cubes, a quilted bag, a blouse, and lots of 80s food - the Home Ec department got a microwave

I made a seagrass stool! I can remember cutting pieces and making the joints, even weaving the top. We had it for years. My mum still has a bit of cross stitch I did at primary school, a tray cloth. In sewing at high school I made summer dresses and eventually for o level a 3 piece suit! |
