Our 1970s holidays (so age 4-14 for me)
1970-1974 - Ireland
1975 - Spain. Proper 70s Benidorm with stomach upsets, Pepe Loco the coach driver, plastic donkey and bulfighting poster with our names on. Never again, said mother.
1976 - 1979 - Ireland.

We had Butlins and Pontins and Warners holidays too -(I think we used to have 3 holidays every year and my folks were always going away somewhere once dad retired. Holidays and travel were their only real "extravagance"
We used to have one 3-generation break each year as well, and there were a couple of late 60s holidays - in self-catering I assume, with Nan and her two sisters, one of whom had 4 boys (older than me but younger than my parents). I remember we went to Sandown in a convoy of 4 or maybe even 5 cars one year and I taught gt Aunty Mary to swim. I thought she was a dear old lady then. I've just worked out she'd be about the age I am now!

The height of my childhood ambitions was to go to Butlins, or even Pontins. Bloody parents dragged us off camping in the bloody Lake District, north and mid Wales, bloody scenic Yorkshire, Isle of Man.

Or we stayed in my pretend auntie's cottage in Northumberland. Little village called Sparty Lee. Bloody Hadrian's bloody wall. Bloody castles. Deserted beaches with no AMUSEMENTS.

WHY CAN'T WE GO TO BUTLINS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE?

'They have TALENT CONTESTS at Butlins!'

This nugget of information still didn't convince mum and dad of the desirability of Butlins.

Anyway, they said it was TOO DEAR.

In 1972 my dad bought a VW caravette as the main family car and that was all our holidays - travelling round Scotland, Wales, Devon, Somerset. Mum and Dad had the bed in the car and us 3 were out in the tent.
3 years though we went “Abroad”. They used to book ferry crossings and a site the first night - somewhere near Abbeville and after that we just headed off, stopped somewhere that had space on a site, stayed a few nights if we liked it, moved on if we didn’t. It was a great way of holidaying apart from my dad being the only driver so he didn’t get much rest.

I only ever got to go to Butlins on an annual day trip to Butlins in Ayr with the Brownies. It was made quite clear at home that Butlins was inferior to Rothesay, though not in what way.

It was too expensive for my clan too, Sharkie. We didn’t go to Butlins but did do the odd visit to Pontins. Will have to trawl my sister’s FB page to find the photos. 😂
