By 1975 my parents had come through saving for a house deposit and the initial purchase costs and we went from "Rothesay" or "days here and there" to fortnights in little hotels (all of us in one bedroom) or self catering in the West Country.

My 1970s holiday destinations were a bit like V'raps. Started with days out/self catering in Northumberland (we didn't have a car so went on the bus) or days out locally. It took 2.5 hours on the bus to Northumberland for what takes about 50 mins in a car so as kids we thought we were going really far away! When I was aged 8/9 my Mum went to work part time and they had a few years of mortgage costs under their belt so we started going to the Isle of Wight for a two week hols in a hotel and the Northumberland trips were sometimes in a B&B rather than a caravan/chalet self catering. We still didn't have a car so we went on the train/ferry. Crossing London to change trains with two children & four suitcases was always an interesting experience! |

On one holiday (our family had become friends with the hotelier and their family by this point) when I was a bit older I once helped babysit for Matthew Corbett's (of Sooty & Sweep fame) kids when he was in summer season at the Isle of Wight and staying at the same hotel!

Arbroath, Silloth, Spittal, Southerness. (Should have St Andrews for the sssset , but that was 1968). Southerness had the biggest caravan EVER - I even had my own room, with bunk beds. And a sleeping bag. The excitement (The room was probably about four foot wide.). The caravan also had big wraparound windows at the end. Sadly that (1973) was my last family holiday away - I think I missed out quite a bit not going anywhere else in mid-childhood. |

Abiding memory of holding on to a tent pole whilst dad tried to dismantle the tent on top of Durness Head in a gale at 2am - we ended up moving the car off the site and sitting in it all night

we had an "interesting" night like that somewhere near Lyme Regis, but we were lucky inland a bit, the caravan site in Charmouth flooded badly

We went to Pontins once. I have no idea where. I was a solitary child, and the Hi-de-Hi people kept trying to get me to join in group activities/performances. Hated it with a vengeance. Most of the other holidays were static caravans in Wales.
