Whilst I'm not totally convinced by all of the arguments that you can be obese and healthy and active I do think there's far more harm in the guilt and self-loathing that society puts on obese people than from the obesity itself.

But yeah, there's stuff to sell so make people feel bad and sell them a solution. Halitosis was invented as a sales gimmick when mouthwash didn't sell. That tells you all you need to know about capitalism. ;-)

Quite right V'rap (and Nellers).
I make some people uncomfortable (or rather they make themselves uncomfortable) because I am an ""I'm OK, thanks" person, when they think I should be worried, afraid, unhappy with myself, because that is how they are, and they are unable to comprehend that some others don't feel how they do.

I am not obese but am overweight and no, I’m not at all happy about it, but as I have just sat down with a mug of tea and a cake left from Sunday, I don’t appear to be able to do anything about it

Yeah. On a recent marathon talk podcast they were saying it’s not as simple as calories in v calories out and not all calories are equal.

While I get the nit being equal but I think it is my experience that burning more calories or taking fewer in does make the difference.

The definition of 'obese' is problematic in itself.

I think the "All calories are not equal" thing might be true chemically I don't know how helpful it is in terms of dietary advice, and come to that if we're talking just about weight loss I'm not sure how much help dietary advice is.

Diets generally don't work in terms of long-term weight loss and lifestyle change. Saying "That's because people don't stick to them" isn't really much help because if you gave people a prescription of pills that was really difficult to follow and stick to in the real world that wouldn't be considered an effective medicine either.

The issue is pretty much never as simple as deciding to eat less, and it certainly isn't as simple as telling people they need to drop a few pounds. That's almost certainly counterproductive in the long term.

Can of worms.

I eat better now I'm working from home. I'm less able to wander off to the shops to get some impulse junk food. I'm also saving money from not buying that impulse junk food or some sushi treats...which add up after a while.

BIG can of very wiggly worms.

[I'm with Health At Every Size and will gladly babble on all day about healthy behaviours but won't push weight loss as a medical intervention and will question decisions to withhold treatments from patients on the grounds of their BMI.]
