Whilst we're on it, I'd like to see less praise, including on here, for rapid weight loss. Unless you are in a state of life-endangering obesity, it is NOT a good thing.
Losing weight in itself is not a good thing. It is what weight you lose. If you have dropped a stone in a month and half of that is muscle: not a positive step. It's highly unlikely that the other half is all fat, either.

Rapid weight loss when you're in the demographic for this thread is very much not a good thing. Regaining lost muscle and associated structures is an uphill struggle when you're no longer in your twenties. Which is not to say that it can't be done and hasn't been done, but it requires good overall health, resistance training, and no taking liberties with nutrition.

I think you've expressed that before V'Rap, and I'm totally with your position.
Dvorak, yes, exactly. Weight is not the thing that should be focused on. Activity, health, fitness, strength, mobility, happiness; yes to any of those, especially happiness. If weight loss comes alongside them then great but if not so what?
Garfield: I'm finding that my meals are healthier but the snacks are less so, and the simple fact that I don't have to walk anywhere is knocking a lot of calories off my daily output (it's surprising how much walking to the car, across the carpark, round the office, up the stairs a couple of times etc adds up).
V'Rap: I think it was you that said squats now were a really good idea if you wanted to be able to get up off the toilet without help when you're 80. I'm doing a lot of lockdown squats.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I spent some time yesterday worrying about what to do with a four year old with a dental abscess who may well need 12 baby teeth removed under a general anesthetic. At a time when there is no elective surgery going on and we are likely to be low on the totem pole when scheduling for operating theatres resumes.
I am pretty sure her parents did not set out to inflict pain and a potentially risky surgery on her, but lots of factors must differentiate her from the 80% of children who reach age 6 without any visible tooth decay. Most of those factors are potentially controllable, but many can't easily be influenced by parents.
Early childhood tooth decay is just one obvious sign of poor diet, most of whose consequences will only appear much later.

Nellers, I usually try to keep as many healthy snack options in the house, with a few 'treats' but not too many that I can go overboard with. No more munching my way through a large bag of crisps from Coop if I'm bored at work!

Controlling what is in the fridge or the cupboard with 5 adults in the house isn't easy Garfield. I have plenty of healthy snacks available but the chocolate keeps calling my name!

Nellers, yes, squats are probably the most useful movement skill/resistance exercise those of us approaching early middle age can do to maintain independence long term, although no matter what we do a bout of sheer bad luck with our health can snatch a lot of it away.
My meal pattern was a lot more conventional during my period of being almost retired. On paper it now looks like too much snacking at my desk and in the evening and not enough sitting at a table eating a proper meal off a plate, but I'm at equilibrium with it.

I was saying to the Girls at tea break this morning that I found an old weight record card from Scottish Slimmers when I joined them in 1988 after giving birth to my son and 32 years later I weigh the same now as I did when I reached my target. Over the years I have gained and lost the same half stone but I’m definitely a different shape. My running times at the moment are slight slower than I would like but I’m fitter than I was.
I certainly couldn’t work from home - I wouldn’t want all the patients phoning me at home
