I'm lucky to still be part of a final salary pension scheme, but that means I'm stuck here for another 11 years, til I'm 65. I could retire earlier but then for every year before 65, it would cut 5% from my pension. Hubby is semi-retired, working as a temp contracts lawyer, current three days a week. I just need to figure out what I want to do for the next 11 years in the company or group...I'm thinking of heading into data scientist area over the next year or two, once I've got the necessary skills.
As for scholastic capabilities...I was reasonably bright there, did reasonably well in school, studied music in university for two years before burning out. Tried a comeback after a two year break, then worked for a while. Eventually after moving over here, I did a BSc in computer science and mathematics with the OU over 6 years while working full time, finishing that up in 2003. If life had gone as planned, I would have been a concert pianist...and possibly not have had the time to take up running...you never know.

We recently got told that Mrs C's cancer has spread to her brain and that we should think about things we want to do, and do them while we can. I'm 62 and was due to retire at 66, but I handed in my notice this week and will leave at the end of the month.
I've got enough of my Mum's inheritance that we can survive on for about a year, which is the sort of time Jan's got left. I'll worry about me after that.

Sorry to hear that, Nick. But a wise decision to make experiences and memories now.

That’s such sad news NC. It would be nice to try and share some good times while you can.

I mentioned earlier that I have about eighteen months to go before retirement, but I am hoping that I may be able continue part time, maybe two or three days a week for a couple of years whilst I still feel inclined and able.
