If I'm going to get properly maudlin over it, I was given all the advantages as a kid (reasonably smart, reasonably sporty, older child, dad with a bit of cash (though I lived with my sis and single parent mum in a council house), but while I did OK (I give myself 8 out of 10!) at school (top of wee school and sports winner; scholarship to big, private school, prizes, top 10 in year, rugby team etc.), uni (2.1 in engineering, rugby team and various society reps) and in working life (computing, manager, director, consultant, now dogsbody contractor), I probably never achieved my full potential, mainly through laziness!

Some of my peers are brain surgeons (actually heart sugeons or head of heart medicine Scotland or UK), Procurator Fiscal (CPS equiv in Scotland) or and bliddy minister for Brexit (though I think I've done better at life than Gove, in any way that matters or that I care about!! :-P )

Right, that was self indulgent! :-) G

I think being happy is more important than being as successful as you have been - we can all look back and think ‘could have done better’ but you also have to remember the what else went on at time many influences impact decisions.

I try to live with no regrets not always easy

As they say, no one has ever said on their death-bed they wished they'd spent more time in the office.

A few years ago an acquaintance told me half the boys in his sister’s primary school class never reached fifty. So I suppose I did ok in comparison.

Indeed growing old is a privilege denied to many. Grow old disgracefully!

I sometimes think I underachieved but I think I found my level and have an unrealistic view of my theoretical potential :)

It’s not that I’m not ambitious, but more a case of being happy with my lot. I started work at Oxford Airport in 1975 where I still work today. I’ve worked for two different companies in that time, but it would have probably been just one had my original employer not closed down in 2008.
I’ve had quite a few different roles in this time, from trainee, mechanic, engineer, designer to department manager. I’m currently doing the job that enjoy most which is working hands on as an engineer with aircraft. Management and design all have had their place, but I’m pleased that my favourite job is the one that I shall finish my career doing, probably in about eighteen months. 🚁

I've got imminent retirement plans too :-) Anyone else escaping the Rat Race before they're 60??
