Alex Yee's time in the triathlon was just 35 seconds behind the last finisher tonight.

Where did you find Alex Yee's splits? It’s one thing that annoys me about the coverage that you don’t get splits and other stats.

The whole boxing thing is a mess because the IOC refused to take a stand.

Allowing males with DSD's (disorder of sex development) in the female category is unfair in every sport and dangerous in sports like boxing.

The Algerian boxer has DSD but has always been raised as female. It's a very complicated situation but I don't think we should refer to her as male. She's competed on other boxing competitions without these issues being raised due to the differences between how the different organisations do testing. I guess the closest parallel will be Caster Semenya.

It was the IBA that changed its stance last year and applied some unspecified test, though it’s not known publicly what was tested nor what the results were. And of course there’s bad blood between the IBA and IOC after the latter took control of boxing due to the farcical and corrupt nature of the IBA (see Olympic competitions passim, though it may not be much improved this time).

archery: why do they have a coach standing next to them during the event? What is it the coach is telling them that they can't see for themselves? It can't be "a bit higher; a bit to the right" as they can see that for themselves! From what I could see, those in the gun events don't have a coach standing next to them so what's the reason for having one in archery?

I reckon the alignment of the body, are you releasing properly, breathing. They're checking. Like long jump, triple jump, throwing. You might think you are doing the right thing, but someone standing there checking is useful.

I think the Algerian is a female by gender (how she feels) and a male by sex (biology).

Failing a gender test is either due to having XY chromosomes or a testosterone level in the male range. Which one it was in this case has not been disclosed.

But both point to a DSD (disorder of sexual development).

That means it's an XY person with testosteron-producing testes that failed to develop male external organs and has internal testes. The persons with this disorder undergo male puberty and have all the advantages puberty brings in males.
They are not "women with high testosterone". They have testosterone levels in the normal ranges for males.

There is a reason these athletes come from developing countries. In the West these disorders are either discovered at birth, or later in life when these persons don't have menses and develop a male built during puberty. Their internal testes pose a higher cancer risk and are often surgically removed. In the West people with a DSD know they have XY chromosomes and will not compete in the women's category.

The IOC does not test athletes. They just look at the passport (M or F).

Female categories were created because men have physical advantages due to male puberty (undeniable biological fact).

To protect women's sports we have to keep biological males out, for reasons of fairness and safety.

The RealScience of Sport podcast has a comprehensive episode about the issue.

About This Thread

Couldn't find a thread so thought I would start one.

Who else is off to watch or who is watching at home?

We're doing Lille and Paris and a mix of sports. Currently trying to find travel insurance that includes ticket cancellation as some of the trains in the UK might be difficult and we have some internal French trains to do as well.

Also need to work out the new Paris metro ticket/app combo (Navigo I think).
