The issue about people with DSD's (disorders of sex development) has come to the Olympics again after Carini, a female boxer, stopped fighting her opponent after 46 seconds. The opponent had previously failed a sex test. Reem Alsalem, the UN’s special rapporteur on VAWG (violence against women and girls), said Carini “rightly followed her instincts and prioritised her physical safety, but she and other female athletes should not have been exposed to this physical and psychological violence based on their sex”. It is one thing to have biological males with a DSD like Caster Semenya in an 800m, but having them boxing against biological females is utterly dangerous. Imho the categories should be based on biological sex and not on gender. |

There's quite a few reasons for the improvement, but the underpinning 2 are Focus and Funding. Funding - mostly through the lottery and spent at the 'GB performance planning' level (guidance, strategy, pathways to success etc), team level (coaches, admin, tech development) and personal level (athlete funding, for those not on mega sponsorship or promotion deals), so typically 'medal potential' athletes across Olympic sports get a living wage so they can devote themselves to their sport. Plus foundation programs to find and develop future potential. In short, a professional development plan and strategy. But the funding is brutal. Meet the targets, get more. Miss the targets, get less. As per theguardian.com I think you'll find all GB Olympians have a whole professional team behind them and a national level 'supervisory' team planning their way to the Olympics a long way out. It's very unlikely you'll get a gifted amateur turning up and surprising people these days. |

Yep - essentially something like basketball or volleyball will never get funding because only two medals to play for, dozens of players needed, and low change of success Swimming/cycling/rowing - dozens of medals and a lot of individual events - possibly with some other individual athletes getting multiple titles for very similar events/skills (relays etc). And quite a bit of investment needed so keeps down competition from other countries |

look out for something Kayak Cross today. Four kayakers on the course at the same time, having to go around gates and perform 360 degree rolls. Bit like BMX racing for kayaks. It looks brilliant fun!

Do winter / summer Olympics sports compete for money from the same funding pot, or is somehow split, simply because our prospects of medals at summer sports is essentially higher than winter, and we could end up with barely bothering at the winter Olympics.

um
uksport.gov.uk A larger proportion (I think) of the GB Winter funding decision is based on grass-roots growth, mainly to develop the pool of potential, eg theguardian.com |
