Tennis was dropped in 1924 but came back in 1988 with no restrictions after being for under 21 only in 1984.

I think it does have significance to some players - Djokovic has won everything except Olympic gold and wants it and Swiatek has just been knocked out in the semi finals and was in tears in a post match interview and walked out of it.

and i think it's fair to say that there are some footballing nations (esp S American??) where Olympic footballing gold is very high on their list. As has been previously said, I think each olympic sport should be the pinnacle achievement, otherwise it shouldn't be in the olympics. But, as has also been said, most of the sports I wouldn't choose are also high money earners for the IOC which, sadly, looks from the outside to be a more important factor than just pure sporting merits.

We had a junior doctor at work who’s Nigerian. I was talking about football to him the other week and asked what his favourite Nigerian team was. His answer was either the 94 World Cup or Atlanta Olympics. So yes there are sometimes different cultural significance among different sports.

1994 was Nigeria's first win at a world cup finals. 1996 they won gold.

I wonder if the IOC will ever challenge FIFA on the status of football. FIFA appear to be the only sporting federation that feel threatened that the Olympics will detract from their own World Champs.

Yeah I saw that! Probably the only part of canoeing I'd be able to do!

I reckon I could get down that course the right way up but I wouldn't have anything to do with the gates at all! I did kayak a lot between 13yoa and when the kids arrived 14 years later but I might be fooling myself because I haven't been in a boat since).

About This Thread

Maintained by Curly45
Couldn't find a thread so thought I would start one.

Who else is off to watch or who is watching at home?

We're doing Lille and Paris and a mix of sports. Currently trying to find travel insurance that includes ticket cancellation as some of the trains in the UK might be difficult and we have some internal French trains to do as well.

Also need to work out the new Paris metro ticket/app combo (Navigo I think).
