This is pure speculation, but the "local" naming of parkruns seems to help with the local community objective of parkrun. For instance, everyone in Salisbury would know exactly where "Churchill Gardens parkrun" would be and indeed that would make it even easier to find for locals. Meanwhile tourists may not be so excited to visit "Churchill Gardens" than to come and tick off "Salisbury". Perhaps I am over-thinking it but I think it's a good thing to adopt local names. Although I sympathise with the description above of Lanark Moor which does seem peculiar!

That's certainly true of The Wammy, which is actually in Knutton, a suburb of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Doesn't work for my upcoming one which is looking likely to be ***** Pavillion parkrun which no-one will know because the pavilion has a historic name that everyone knows and refers to it as. Might help guarantee a low key inaug at least

TZ - There is a beautiful cathedral to tick off too - so beautiful you may need to visit twice, even if coming from overseas...

Dungannon Park parkrun launched a few weeks ago. Unlikely a second one will start in a town of its size any time soon, if ever.

It's to throw tourists off the scent - pure and simple.... All identity is lost basically

I don't believe it is to throw tourists off the scent given parkrun regularly celebrate tourists and many of the higher echelons of parkrun are regular tourists (including PSH).

Plus it wont work, as tourists aren't interested in what it's called, just where it is (and for some, whether they've been before), all of which they get from the map or tourist tool, not from the run's name.

The only rational explanation has to be about allowing for growth, but it seems the rule is being applied to the letter in all cases, rather than applying it with some common sense.

Surely the parkrun ethos is to embrace the local community and be community driven at event level? In which case, they should let the community choose the name. And, when it comes to it, why not let the first run in a town use the town's name; if you like their reward for getting the first one over.

That seems to have turned into a bit of a rant :-)

Including Pavilion in the name seems a bit odd. It might be helpful in locating the HQ, but odd, as it's basically naming a parkrun after a (not for profit) business building. Given that the pavilion is now named after the historic official name of the site it seems unnecessary.

Personally I would of thought most people locally would know where ********* is, even if it isn't the name that they might use. I don't think the name will hinder too many people finding your new parkrun blindcider!

There may be an inaugural parkrun happening near you. Best to check with the local parkrun volunteers to see if they want you to know about it or not.

Otherwise there are plenty of already established parkruns to go to in the UK and abroad, see: parkrun.org.uk
