(having said that - there is a park called Lewisham Park, so it wouldn't have been right to have that as our name, too confusing).

Park rather than town is to allow for further events being set up in the town. It might be that Greenwich pre-dated this policy.

That's exactly it. If you want the town name then you are allowed 'park name, town' like Higginson, Marlow. If you google Marlow parkrun this comes up so might be a solution.

The naming of Lanark Moor parkrun was a nonsense (which from FB the team were pushed into, as they wanted, quite sensibly, to call it Lanark). It runs round a loch and through some woods. The choices (they had a poll) were Lanark Moor and Lanark Racecourse. There is, as far as I could see, no moor involved and the course skirts, but does not use, the long defunct racecourse. It ended up as Lanark Moor (which in Scotland, should be Muir, if anything). Lanark has a population of 9000 and would I think is highly unlikely to launch a second parkrun anywhere. Peebles (population 8000) is finally good to go, I read. Wonder if it will be saddled with some unnecessary nomenclature (Peebles Riverside would be my guess, if so)? A google brought up a first mention of it on FE almost exactly three years before the (rumoured) start date.) |

There's also 'Preston Park parkrun' in Brighton which distinguishes itself from 'Preston parkrun' in Preston

Becca, I've actually found a reference to a prospective Peebles parkrun over seven years ago, just before Falkirk started! scottishrunningguide.com (Although afaik Borders initiatives have been off and on over the years unlike Loughborough's prolonged struggle to parkrunhood.) |

Ah, is that why the names have become more location specific. We'd love to have another parkrun in our town but every scrap of green space has been considered and ruled out for one reason or another |

We’ve been having the same naming drama with Stratford-upon-Avon Juniors - we already have our existing 5K run at the same venue but due to the new policy they want to call it after the name of the road the rec is on which is also the name of a pub nearby! My co-Ed is moving to Ed the jpr and he’s a bit annoyed.

Peebles was mentioned (along with Stirling) in my early day days setting up Inverness. Which would have been around the dawn of Falkirk too. I don't think it makes much sense to name small town parkruns after the park. Better to get the town name out there (like all those Scottish towns people only know from the football results). And what the locals call an area may not be what is on everyone's Satnav. Somehow we managed to get Fort William named that even though the event is up the road at the Nevis centre. And I'm fairly sure most visitors to Inverness are glad they are not asked to say Bught parkrun, especially as it is in Whin Park half the time now. If there is no flexibility in naming I would be tempted to try and find the most Gaelic of park names to host an event. Camanaghd parkrun anyone? |
