Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Thanks Pix. I'm still struggling with pull ups without resistance bands to help me. I can only manage one without them. I keep on working on it though.

Ness - what are the blocks you are resting the barbell on in the photos- the silver ones. I definitely need something like them for my deadlifts.

I’ve been doing some resistance band and body weight exercises on holiday, hoping I don’t loose too much strength whilst we are away. I’m quite missing going to the gym. I never thought I’d say that!

That's a good question, TeeBee. I have had to be careful with my deadlifting because of slightly restricted motion in my right hip that's had the resurfacing so I wanted to buy proper blocks. Those one in the photo are old books that Mr Ness has covered in gaffer tape. They do the job but I thought it was a terrible waste of books!

GimmeMedals - fab to hear you say that :-) you should be ok, esp if you keep up with the bodyweight and bands. Sprinters and jumpers do far less weights work in the competitive season for instance - we just keep ticking over.

Enjoy your hol to the full. (I know you will)

Well done, GimmeMedals ! I'm thinking that I will be probably take my resistance bands with me on my cruise so I can do a short set of exercises each morning before breakfast. Otherwise I'm not sure I'll fit any weight training in. There is a gym though so I might be able to do something on 'sea days'.

Bit of a “how long is a piece of string” question, but I’m wondering how long it’s going to take me to see an increase in muscle mass and would be interested in your experience/opinions.

I’m 57, 59kg, 5’7” and somewhere between 25% and 30% fat (gym scales vs. Garmin bathroom scales) and am either 41% muscle (presumably skeletal, smooth & cardiac?) or have 1.9 kg muscle ??? again as defined/measured by gym scales vs garmin. I started weight training 2-3 times a week about 10 weeks ago, with typical upper and lower body regimes of 3 sets of 10 reps as set by a PT. I do feel a bit stronger (but I think that’s more to do with mindfully “engaging” muscles before doing stuff) and have increased most of the rep weights by 10% or so recently, but can’t see any outward signs of muscle increase. Also at the 7-week weigh-in, I’d dropped 1% point in muscle and turned it into a kg of fat :-( New weigh-in tomorrow, so I’m hoping for better.

Reality check - I’m not expecting to turn into the Incredible Hulk but starting at such a low level of weakling (at least in the arms, legs are not too bad from running and cycling), I was hoping for better than just not bingo wings! My desire for more muscle/less fat is general long term good health in particular now I’m well into post-menopause.

And in case you're wondering about that title, well, I like alliteration and one can be too po-faced about the use of girl/lady/woman.
