Thanks SPR that’s really useful As long as the strap isn’t so thick that it makes it even harder with my little hands straps like that should help |

How do straps - and gloves for that matter - work? (Are gloves cos hands might be sweaty? Mine never are cos I'm always so cold!) Because I can't fully bend the fingers on my left hand, the padding on the palm of the glove helps fill in the gap and I can get a firmer grip of the bar. |

What SPR said is pretty much it for how belts work. There’s a fair bit to explaining how belts work. Short version: put the belt on tightly enough so you can get 1 or 2 fingers between you and the belt. Before you start a lift, take a deep, diaphragmatic breath then push the muscles at the front, back & sides of your abdomen against the belt this creates a rigid tube. While you’re pushing out against the belt, the belt pushes back against the muscles increasing core stiffness which improves rigidity and force transfer from you to the weight making the lift more efficient. I can go into more detail if anyone wants it. I think belts that are the same width all around are more effective for barbell/powerlifting type of lifts than the type that taper, but they are more difficult to get used to. strengthshop.co.uk |

That's useful. Thanks, HK. Mr Ness has recently bought me a belt to use forces deadlifting. I'm still getting used to it but it seems to have helped me improve my form.

This the belt I have, again with a bias towards something that would also work for Olympic lifting. strengthshop.co.uk |

I love this thread, I learn so much! I used ancient leather weightlifting gloves, largely because I don't like the rough surfaces of the barbell and dumbbells. Inching closer to solving the mystery of the barbell weight. It's 1.8m long (i.e. just a few cm taller than me). The manufacturer responded quickly to my query but not very helpfully as they suggested it might be a commercial one, either 1.7m / 10kg or 2m / 15kg - and neither of those lengths is right. I'll have scales by Monday so will stop wondering for now and just weigh it. You'd think I could tell by comparing it against plates but I can't! |

This morning, after my 1 set of 6 x 45kg & 2 sets of 6 x 55kg deadlifts, thought I'd just try 60kg. I managed 3 reps. So surprised I forgot to make an appropriate noise whilst doing it. 🤣 Only 4kg shy of my body weight. Still can't manage more than the weight of the bar when trying to wave weights above my head, though. |
