I don’t want to be too evangelical about CrossFit as it’s almost cult-like following was one of the things that almost put me off starting it but I have to admit it’s been great for me.

It is hard work but you train to your own level so I scale things back if it’s likely to be too hard and I am in my own place in terms of how heavy the weights go so it’s building up from a start.

The main thing I like is that I have felt so much fitter and stronger but mainly that lost over a stone in weight since May and I can fit into a pair of jeans I bought 2 years ago but was too fat to wear 😄😄😄

Loulou everything is scaled but yes it is hard work. Its not for everyone but I love it.

Our typical session is jog warm up/stretch/mobility work.

Warm up session 10-15 mins of skills work (light weight/empty bar/training bar/broom handle depending where you are)

Then the 'brutal' workout lasting anywhere from 8-20 minutes depending on what you've already done.

You have 'rests' inbetween and need time to set up for the next bit so classes tend to be about an hour long. I would always say get there early to do some of your own warm up and gentle stretches beforehand and stay afterwards to take time to stretch and roll out afterwards. You will appreciate it at the next session.
You may find they don't let you use weights until they are happy with your technique so be prepared for that. Good technique helps prevent injuries.

I dithered over going for a very long time. I visited the gym before going for my first session the week after. I admit I found it very strange and a little bit intimidating at first but the instructors have been great and class members really do get behind you. They all started out as beginners at one point and know what it's like. If/when you go I'd love to hear how you get on

EB - What you said about CrossFit being intimidating initially? Now apply that to learning sprints.

What sort of suggestions are you looking for, Ness? Training programmes for weights, or conditioning you can do while you're waiting for your foot to be fixed?

I’m not exactly sure but conditioning I could do while I’m waiting for my foot to be fixed sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

You're not to old t learn to sprnt er, plus what SPR said about Crossfit. I didn't learn until my mid 50s - I did no athletics at all at school or in my teens. I bet you'd enjoy the training - short intense bursts, long recoveries (well, mainly!). You'd probably enjoy jumping and throwing too - to my great surprise I really like both now. I NEVER, EVER saw myself as remotely athletic and it's probably on eof the defining things about me now.

It was intimidating demanding a sprint group accepted me - I'd be lying if I claimed otherwise - but I was a lot older than you and it's been so, so worth it!

Thanks Sharkie but I think I'd need to lose about four stone before having the courage to approach a track. I will bear that in mind though
