Ravelry is a great place to start, DocM, it's a sort of Fetch for knitters, a free site. Loads of free patterns, and people post their projects with pictures, so you can have a look at lots of different versions of a pattern.

Welcome DocM..

Aran weight sounds good. You’ll see quick progress.

If you settle on the pattern.. think about the yarn
Maybe the superwash varieties to reduce(😊) a shrinking disaster on the first wash?

I've dug out my old paper patterns ( my mum's patterns) most are older than me, and most feature men smoking pipes or children in balaclavas or knitted swimwear

And women with impossibly tiny waists and beaming smiles? That's what I recall from my Mum's patterns :-)

My Mum had a ruthless clearout when she realised she couldn't knit any more because of arthritis and binned all hers. Wish she'd asked me if I wanted any first!

I bought this bag the day mum had her heart surgery and my stupid head says bag us still going mum is. I use it loads. I don't want to lose it bin it break it.

It's stupidly attached to mum surviving surgery.

But the handles are almost broken.

What's the best and easiest way to repair?

I would probably replace the handles with some cotton webbing as the easiest option. They'd last ages too, more robust than simple fabric.
