Very interesting shawl Jelly. It’s lace knitting isn’t it ? (my granny did fine lacework that was pinned to a cushion with about 100 wooden bobbins…I can’t think you’d do a shawl that way) Yep…keep those lifelines going in. 😀.

Lol, yes lace knitting not bobbin lace! It always looks so complicated bobbin lace I watched a lady at Ally Pally one year, the principles are similar but all those bobbins would freak me out!
I think I have over 70 sts on each section (there are 6 sections) now!

My grandmother taught me how to do bobbin lace as a child. I still have the equipment together with bobbins that belonged to my great great Aunts but I couldn’t manage anything much more than a bookmark or handkerchief edging.

Bobbin lace is surprisingly simple. You start at one side with the first 4 bobbins, make a stitch, then discard 2 and pick the next 2, make the next stitch, etc, gradually working you way across the pillow. When you get to the other side, you just reverse the process. You never work with more than 4 at a time. The pattern is printed on card underneath the threads. The beads on the bobbins are for weight and prettiness, you don't use them to identify the bobbins or anything like that. 4 year old children used to be involved in lace production in the olden days before machine production.

That sounds as of it would be quite soothing and pleasing to do jabberknit
My sister has asked for a jumper for Christmas and the pattern she's chosen asks for Italian cast on. It's not something I've used before- is it very different from long tail and what are the benefits of using it? Thanks

As jabberknit says, the beads are for weight and prettiness and are called ‘spangles’. Young men used to carve cherry stones to give to their young lady to use on their bobbins. A trouser button was considered a little more risqué.

I’ve not googled the method but the Italian cast on is a tubular cast on, it’s just aesthetics at the end of the day so really up to you! Give it a go and see how you get on, there were a lot of utube videos!

Does anyone know if there is a sewing equivalent of the advanced pattern search on Ravelry? Similar to searching for patterns that use x metres of DK say? I have 5m of dark blue boiled wool. I bought it to make a longline duster coat, but the more I look at the pattern the more I know I won’t ever wear it. I want to make something I’ll wear with this fabric - it certainly wasn’t cheap! - but I’m not finding anything anywhere that inspires
