German short rows help with shaping bits like the neck and shoulders. Good idea to check them out before you start.

German short rows are quite straightforward if you’ve got good instructions, and knitting in the round is easy - instead of turning to come back across the row, you just keep going!

Thanks both, maybe it won't be as tricky as I fear!

Morning all
D1 is after a sewing machine for her birthday. She’s doing textiles for GCSE so needs to be suitable for that. I’m trying to get her to ask her teacher but her ASD makes it tricky to ask for help.
Any advice? Obviously not setting out to break the bank but don’t want to get a cheap one that can’t do enough.
Thanks!

I used to swear by Singer, always a good name but now have a Janome. Lidl will sometimes sell a singer machine.
Basic can be cheap, and obviously they go into the thousands!
I’m asd too and have always preferred a drop in bobbin. If she’s not interested in helping to pick one out and won’t ask her teacher and you still feel a bit stuck I would quietly email the teacher for advice!

Janome 725 was used on Sewing Bee, John Lewis do their own one 7025,same underneath the branding. I got a lower range one 2200xt I think, but if she's into textiles I'd go for a 5 or 7 series Go to a shop if you can, rather than online

All I can say is that I bought an Elna when I was 21 and 46 years later it's still going strong!

I'd ask the teacher independently to get a sense of whether a basic machine will be OK or whether something with more functionality would be better for what she needs to do for the curriculum. What machines do the school use?
Janome gets good reviews for reliability. I bought one last year and it's been fine - though TBH not as good in some ways as my old Husqvarna. I went for a manual rather than computerised model as I don't need loads of fancy stitches which I'll never use.
Second the idea of going into a shop, if you can find one near! There was one in Deptford until last year.

Thanks all!
There’s a Hobbycraft in Orpington which is relatively easy to get to. Any other shops to consider/avoid?
The school use Bernina machines which seem to be on the pricey side!
