I’d ask myself whether she’s likely to continue wanting to use it after the course or not. If not I’d be likely to ask school whether there are any loan or hire schemes they know of. Otherwise you could spend quite a lot of money on something which ends up gathering dust

Bernina are pricey but very good. A friend who's a professional sewer has one (she does wardrobe for West End shows - War Horse and We Will Rock You were two of hers).

Good points from HB too.

Good point HB. I think she’s reasonably likely to carry on. She’s been doing a lot of hand stitched embroidery for a while now (independent of school work) and seems to really enjoy it.

I know it's a lot of money but I think if you have a good machine it can save you mkney in unexpected ways. When I got mine as a student I never expected that 15 years later I would make loose covers for two sofas and an armchair with it :-)

Good luck with the sweater LD If it’s your first In the Round project .. then, for me, the cast on and first couple of rounds were horrid. After about round 3 it starts to look and feel better. I still end up with a gap where I’ve joined the cast on round.. but that’s easily closed by darning in the tail.

I have two Singers. An early 1970s one that was my mums when I was a child and a 10 yo one.

The old one is the most reliable. The only thing that’s better on the new one is the automatic threader 🤣

I have an ancient (1930s?) Singer which is a joy. I used to use it a lot when I was between electric machines as a student.

I learnt on an 1890s Singer - long one now. The long bobbin case was wonderful.
