I'm seeking advice please :)
I'm doing a sock knitting thing this year - a pair a month - and this month I chose a speckled yarn, but the diamond pattern of the sock is a bit lost due to the mottled colour. I've been looking for yarn for next month's pair but nearly all the sock yarns I see on the web are also patterned.

Q. Do yarns that knit into stripes also hide the pattern or should I stick with plain yarn for lacey or cabled patterns?

A self-striping yarn won't show a cable or lace pattern as well as a plain yarn will, but it won't scramble it up in the way a speckled or random dyed yarn would do.

If you want a plain, WYS signature 4ply is excellent, not too pricey and has a lot of plain colours

If you're looking for something inexpensive to get started with and might use a range of sizes, these are surprisingly good for the price. One circular needle from a major brand will cost around £5.

(Be sure to specify 43cm and use the Fetch link.)

Avoid Pony, they're dreadful.

Agree, avoid Pony like the plague
those are amazing value V’rap, a set may have just slipped into my basket :-) - I need a 2.75 for the sleeve of this jumper and I’d pay that much for one Addi one

Thank you for your help, Vrap and HB. I've ordered a couple of skeins of plain wool to make the next 2 pairs of socks and have added some self-striping to a wish list for buying in the future.

I don't have a knitting blog, runnyeyes, everything that isn't confined to my head is on my Fetch blog or on my Ravelry project notes.
