Ive been beavering away at the Veil of Leithan Shawl, finally found the rhythm of the pattern and hopefully it will be less sweary and fewer frogs!

I've also been working on this as the latest bits arrived- nearly halfway with 63 issues completed. The body shell isn't yet fixed to the chassis, that will be in future issues.

Here's the results of my swatches for the silk stocking project. All were knitted on 0.7mm needles in stocking stitch to a length of 50mm.

gummed yarn thicker 40 stitches

gummed yarn thinner 50 stitches

silk floss 40 stitches

The stocking project is considering the results of the test swatches and deciding what to use for the actual project. The gummed yarns were tricky to knit with, but at least dropped stitches didn't run for freedom to the bottom. The floss was nicer to work with but felt very dangerous and disaster could strike at any moment. It was also impossible for me to see what I was doing and I had to plonk my varifocals on my head while I was doing them. Each swatch took between 4.5 and 5 hours to work. Knitting was quicker than purling.

I have since discovered a whole world of miniature knitting, a place to which I don't want to go again.

If a swatch takes 4.5-5 hours to knit then that suggest that only very rick Elizabethans wore stockings! Am I right in thinking that sticking knitting was done by a closed-shop guild?

We don't know yet how long each stocking may take, they haven't decided on what yarns and needles to use. I think these are too small. At that scale the purl rows took longer than the knit rows, so I think it will be quicker when it is knit. I think Hugenots did most of the silk stocking hand knitting and also some on frames. en.wikipedia.org And then machines took over. I can see why you'd want a machine to do it. I also couldn't see what I was doing most of the time.
