Mandy, youtube is your friend but you need to be aware of whether the patterns are written in US or UK terminology as the stitches are different. It should say somewhere on the pattern. For UK crochet terms, Attic24 has some good tutorials

And again for Attic 24. Making toys is a different concept from crocheting flat, the stitches are the same but more increases/decreases and variation in stitches for shaping.

Might be worth looking at something like the African flower hippo that uses granny squares/shapes joined together?

I’m currently making bread and slicing it then freezing it in a plastic bag that’s a little small!

(normally but from supermarket bakery sliced then freeze in their bag)

What I’m thinking of doing is making a bag - is just cotton ok or should I line with rip stop fabric?

For freezing you probably want something more airtight. Commercially sold ones are made of waxed cotton I think.

Mandymoo, have a practice on something before you tackle the actual toys. Making a ball would give you the basic stuff around increasing / decreasing - esshaych.blogspot.co.uk for example (though when doing circles you also want to avoid increasing in the same place every time as that tends to give you a hexagon: ahookamigurumi.com ) tells you how to avoid that.
