Started and finished a couple of small projects this week. The hat is for son's gf. Mittens for me but they're a bit big - they'll do for when I'm timekeeping at parkrun - I'll be able to fit the stopwatch inside!! ravelry.com ravelry.com |

gosh very clever! This year not only am I on a yarn diet but I am going to venture into being more daring with sox. I only do a simple winwick mum pattern and cuff down. I will attempt some patterns, 2 at a time and maybe toe up too seeing a I do have a tonne of yarn to use! My crochet is basic so those gloves look amazing kwala! I would like to try the crochet hippo though as that looked cool! I have been taking a plain stockinette stitch scarf to do at work and avoid the restaurant at work as that doesn't need any thought - I may try that virus shawl at some point! Need to use my sewing machine more too. Shame teaching and marking takes up so much time! |

I'm planning to knit a sweater, but the problem is I don't know what size to do. Size M is for 92cm bust, L is for 104cm. Mine is 98cm. On waist and hips I'm pretty much spot on M. All the lengths for M are slightly too long for me. I have gauge problems, too, so can't really guarantee what size the thing will turn out to be in any case. On three recent projects, all religiously swatched to the correct gauge (well, on stitches anyway, I can't cope with doing rows as well), I got the following: Project 1 (lightweight worsted): gauge 18, actual from 16 to 18.5 Project 2 (4 ply): gauge 25, actual from 26 to 28 (no wonder it came out too small) Project 3 (5 ply): gauge 26, actual from 24 to 25 (no wonder it came out too big) This sweater will be in DK. I'm inclined to go for M, with negative ease on the bust, swatch as usual, and hope for the best. What would you do? |

Teaching and marking doesn't half get in the way of crafting, EP! Although I have managed to get away with knitting socks in governors' meetings...

I think this is where complicated maths comes in. You need a gauge that doesn't match the pattern so you can follow one size but it comes out smaller or bigger. I used some on my jumper, as I didn't like the fabric in the correct gauge, but I probably went a long way around it. I've ended up knitting a larger size with denser fabric and it's worked! I realise that doesn't help if your gauge is different from your swatch, are you doing something different when knitting the garment? If it's in the round your swatch should also be done in the round, for example. |
