Very painful when getting moving like climbing out of bed or getting up off a chair but easier and more mobile as I loosen up. I'm pretty certain I pinged the sciatic nerve. Stretching helps, combined with the painkillers. No rowing or running for a few days, I fear.

I've had sciatic nerve issues, Mate. If you look at the pictures in my gallery there's illustrations of the various movements and exercises the physio gave me that have helped.
The more general advice was to move as much as I could.

Yes, I found some stretches on an NHS webpage. They are helping a lot. What I've found with the sciatic nerve in the past is that it hurts like buggery for a couple of days and then subsides rapidly. Hopefully this time too.
Slight digression: Did anyone else go to see the Bodyworlds expo some years back when it was in the UK? That German fellow with his embalmed ("plastinated" in his terminology") corpses illustrating the human body. I remember one of a skeleton with just the nervous system retained. The sciatic nerve is about as thick as your middle finger and threads its way through the pelvis. You can see how easily it can get caught/pinched/irritated, especially with all the musculature there as well.

Not seen that but my physio did show me a model with the sciatic nerve layout. Very surprised on how thick it was AND how many pinch points there were too

A decent warmup then 5,000m done at UT2 pace to test the dodgy back, and it went well. A few minor twinges but nothing more. The plan is to coast along with easy workouts now till the end of the year, being extra careful when climbing on and off the thing and in particular when removing and replacing it from its stowage under the stairs.

And stopping at the slightest twinge? Take it easy and come back stronger, mate.
I’m giving it a few more days before I try out the Achilles on the rower again. When I screwed it up the other week I didn’t have the mobility in it to get my shins vertical at the catch without it being painful but things have improved since then. A few more days and I reckon I’ll be back at it.

You to make me feel positively Olympian ! 😁
Take it steady. There’s a whole year waiting just around the corner.
Trying to shake a lousy cold but it won’t be around as long as a ruddy injury so counting my blessings and just paddling at below 100 hr ❤️
