Oldest guy here (86) just won his age group in 11 minutes. What a hero!

40-49 men won in 6:40 so that 50-54 time was a real outlier. Graham Benton, which is a name I’ve heard certainly heard before.

Benton was taken on by the GB Olympic squad after a series of electrifying indoor performances (I can remember him being top of the c2ctc table Every.Single.Month). Although he rowed OTW he was a little old for the squad and lacked some finesse. I think he rowed a few qualifying regattas with them but ultimately didn't make the cut.

Just caught the “6th form boys” 2k. Jeezus if that lad who won does any more growing I don’t know what he’ll be pulling. He won in just under 6:10 and he was about 6’7” and his shoulders were just about that wide too!

Back home and in the shed this morning feeling a bit inspired after the weekend. 3 x 10 min UT1 ticked off. I'm thinking that if I can get my act together and be in decent shape I want to give it a go next year and try to get a pb in competition. Benton won my age group in 6:05 but second place was a much more human 6:21. I still think that with some decent training and a good mindset I could dip under 7 and that would get me comfortably top 20, depending who turns up. It might not happen but I reckon that's the target I'm aiming at for the next 12 months. Full results from Saturday are here: racecreator.online |

Puzzled by Oranj's comment that the guy "lacked some finesse". Did he tell dirty jokes, or fart in front of the judges? Where's the finesse in blasting out a 6:05 2k? |

Oh that Benton guy is an absolute beast on the erg but I can imagine sitting him in an 8 with 7 experienced on-the-water rowers and asking him to fit in and co-ordinate nicely might be more of a struggle than anything. Also he's got huge shoulders and looks quite top-heavy so trying the alternative of a skull and letting him do his own thing might result in a lot of swim training!

Nellers looking at those results im gutted I didn’t get my act together earlier in the season. Game on. I’m going to be there next year. A podium place is quite possible. |

Game on indeed Jef! It's going to come down to who turns up and when their birthdays are for both of us I think. The Open winner was slower than the U23, Masters 40-49 and the Masters 50-54 winners. The U23 winner was the only guy going under 6 minutes. It felt like, with no BRIC for a couple of years and the new format this time round, a lot of the "big boys" just didn't bother and the field suffered as a result. If word gets out about how well this worked as part of FitFest, and assuming that FitFest was financially successful for the organisers and happens again, it might be a bigger field with a bit more top end next year. But hopefully some of the fast age groupers will think about opening the Open rather than the age group and give us mere mortals more hope! |
