I don't recall the distances but I think they were usually held at sport centres, to use the track for the running and cycling. To my mind the obvious problem is that all three disciplines are leg-oriented. The idea was to popularize the rower and the competitive element wasn't too serious -- people would do the cycling leg round the track on their shopping bikes, for example. But it never caught on and the need to source a bunch of ergs wouldn't have helped.

And on the subject of erging -- none for me today. After two days of black cloud and heavy rain the sun is out, the sky is blue, and my trail shoes are calling my name. Several miles along the coastal path and call in at my favourite pasty shop on the way home. A day not wasted!

Went to the gym today with my daughter who showed me how some of the machines and stuff works so I did mostly weights. I did manage 10 x 30 seconds on/30 seconds off and then about 10 minutes unstrapped easy paced. This gym only has one Erg but it’s been looked after and works well. I think that will be the gym to use when I’m up here again.

Marlow rowing club used to do a rowathlon, as an end-of season fun. I was called the Rower's Revenge. It was 4k erg/24k bike/7.5k run. The bike course started by taking you up a long hill, right after you'd climbed off the erg, so the real key was not to get too carried away on the erg!
I did it twice, first time in 1999 I split 14:48/36:31/28:45 + transitions and came 4th, gah, and then again in 2008 when James Cracknelll was just getting into multisport, so I was in better shape and determined to beat him! Unfortunately I punctured on the bike leg (it was pissing down and there was loads of flint - this is the Chilterns) and DNF'd.

I've just dug out the results PDF, and he did 1:28 (for 5th), with a relatively slow bike and run. So considering I thought I was in better shape than when I did 1:25 in 1999, yes, I'd have had 'im Oh well!

Steve Cram was at the Reading Half one year. I shot past him as soon as the gun went off and never saw him again

Nice 666 session Oranj!
A rowathlon sounds good. I'm seeing people are doing Ergathlons (Row, ski, bike) I quite like the Ski erg but never tried the bike erg.
A trip to York this weekend to see my son who's at uni, so just a steady 9k for me this weekend.

A brisk 5000m this morning. Goal achieved, to finish slightly ahead of myself from the last time. Done by 10 metres (ie, about one stroke), hr a smidge higher but within the daily variation so I'll bank that, thank you.
