It's funny as I was talking to a mate of mine about this on Saturday. At the end of the day, although I do take it fairly seriously, running is a hobby and I spend most of my spare cash on it, whether it be kit, races, travelling, etc. He would laugh at me for spending £500 on a running watch, but then he spends ££££ on hifi gear, because he's a sound geek. He freely admits that to most people they wouldn't tell the difference between his speakers that cost a couple of thousand pounds, and ones that cost a few hundred, but it's his hobby so he spends his cash in that area. Another mate is into photography, another one heavily into live music and travelling for bands I've never even heard of, and they spend their cash in those areas. I suppose we're all different. My OH has spent what I consider a lot of money creating something of an indoor gym, with loads of weights, kettle bells, and other equipment. But it's her hobby. At least with that she no longer needs to go to the gym so she's saved in that way, and she loves working out at home now as she meets up virtually with friends etc. This is something that has only happened since the first lockdown, and I felt very sorry for the postmen who were lugging very heavy weights up to our house whenever she ordered some new stuff! At least running watches and shoes are very light for the posties |

That's what I use too. They're great for detail. Since I installed them, I haven't spent much time worrying about contour lines so don't really have a view (will report back in July after I'm back from the Lakes)

Yes, I'm a TalkyToaster fan too. Their topo maps are a huge improvement on the basic map that's bundled with BaseCamp

I just updated the firmware on my forerunner 245 and now get "suggested workouts" when I view the workout section in the run menu. The last 3 days have been telling me to rest which I am ignoring because I'm 3 weeks into a Jack Daniel's half-marathon training plan. It does seem quite interesting though - Have others used it? I think it might be overly conservative? |

Had this on my fr945 for a while but have never used it. Today it is suggesting a vo2 max session of 5x3min as I've not done a lot of speedwork recently, so think it does take previous runs into account. Having said that I do see "rest" quite a lot too. Maybe because the recovery time is still high. Something I take with a bag of salt at any time! |

Sigh
@Kieren, I've had the same update and until today, it's not been aligned to my training at all. It told me to rest on Sunday, but I ran a half as a LSR. It told me to rest on Monday, I did a 5km recovery run. Today it told me to do a 'base' run of 47 mins, which seems at odds with yesterday's recovery advisor of 42 hours (a continuation of the recovery from Sunday's half). In fact I've done 60 mins at an easy pace, which I suppose isn't far off the suggested workout. |

I think it's best used in conjunction with the suggested workouts ie if it doesn't know your plan it's just guessing. Saying that, I believe the feedback is based on HR and HRV along with Load so it will know if you are doing more than usual and what your recovery is like. You need to make sure your HR data is right though or rubbish in - rubbish out.

Not sure I'd be trusting a watch to essentially be your coach...
