p.s. Quimby - I also have a Vivoactive 4 as my day to day watch. When in the hills I use a Suunto Core and sometimes carry an ETrex 32

I think, runners and triathletes, StuH. I plan to use it for running and cycling. When I use my bike I use it with a speed/cadence sensor.

The 6 is really the odd one out as 9 seems to be premium runners/ triathlete (essentially plastic Fenix). 245 is mid range runner, 745 is multisport entry (it's an XT watch and the cheapest Garmin do isn't it?) but feature set is higher the mid range for runners. Also due to release cycles, it's possible that the 9 and 7 are close in price.

Main difference between 745 and 945 is 945 has longer battery life and mapping. Previously the 735 didn’t have the barometric altimeter but the 745 does.

I have a Fenix 6x and it gets banged on rocks and tree roots regularly when I fall over trail running, so I hope I wouldn’t quite match NE’s description even if I’m never going to run a BGR!

And I suspect the 6xx running watch line is no more. There’s not much space left between the 245 and the tri and outdoor watches.

I didn't mean to sound disparaging Dom, sorry. In my very limited experience of these devices, it really has always seemed to be road runners that were sporting them so I was a bit puzzled - presumably they have functionality that makes them useful in that context.

One thing that is an advantage with the 6x is how big the screen is - ageing eyes can cope better with that than the 945 which is almost identical functionally otherwise.

I do get the impression that people are making the decision on “looks smarter” (which is a consideration in some jobs, certainly) versus “too heavy” (a friend who runs similar trail races to me, only faster, bought a 945 because it was so much lighter. Mind you he’s a lot lighter than me as well so less of a worry for me!)

That's interesting. One of the reasons I've never really considered a wrist-mounted device for mountain navigation is that I don't run in glasses or contacts and my eyes just aren't good enough, hence the Suunto with big characters (I only use it for barometric altitude and time) and the eTrex where I can just about make out the waypoints and the tilt-axial compass pointer.

So, do you use it for navigation? Presumably it's a native capability rather than app like DW Maps, my wife has used this on her 745 before.
