Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The big thing is (a) why would they bother attacking me out of 2billion+ others and (b) keep backups of the most crucial stuff on an external.

And if it's only visible very occasionally, it would have to be exceptionally bad luck to be attacked.

I think the point is that the built in "remote access" functions on those branded devices, like my Synology or your Qnap, are designed as secure routes into the server. So you don't need to open / close the access on the router etc.

e.g. on my synology, I use the url [myuniquename].quickconnect.to to access the NAS. That routes traffic firstly through Synology's servers (I believe) and then when it finds my device I have 2 factor authentication to access it. So I could hand out the URL today to you all, and none of you are getting onto my NAS. And the fact that the URL has my unique name at the beginning means no-one is going to stumble onto my NAS by mistake.

Got something to say?

For various reasons, I would like to build a home server for back-up and storage reasons so that I can move away from using external hard drives as erratic back-up.

I also want to be able to dump stuff from my phone to clear it out more frequently.

What is the best/cheapest way to do this?

I probably don't need more than a maximum 4TB back-up space - but do I need to double this and have 2x 4TB to enable a back-up? I know SSDs rarely fail (certainly compared to HDD), but it is poss...
