Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

New week team and apparently today is blue Monday so let’s look for the positives and remember our focus.

I’ve come down with a head cold which is seemingly going full blown I feel dreadful and have a very busy at work and going to Prague on Friday so hoping I can shift it. I’m having a duvet working day.

Weekend wasn’t too bad food wise.

Friday we did get fish & chips as I’d ran long, shopped & house-worked before wing taxi for my mam and her friends - kept me away from wine although I did have a G&T when I got back

Saturday I had a shorter run, and we had all parents over for a post Xmas dinner

Yesterday used some of the leftover chicken and made chicken egg fried rice and chinese curry sauce. We’ll use some of the beef tonight in a stroganoff.

Don’t think I’ll get much running in taking today as an extra rest day as a starter. I’ll try to do yoga.

Have a good one!

well done everyone
shocked at 1/2lb down this morning but could be because we had our roast at mid day and we didn't eat in the evening as full (I did have wine!)
Hopefully next week will see a proper drop

Morning all, happy new week.

I woke up early (for me) this morning at 7.30 and decided to go to the gym. Five minutes on the treadmill to warm up, then about 20 minutes round various machines. Not pushing myself to go heavy or do loads of reps, just feeling my way in gently. Couldn’t afford to spend too much time anyway as we have some workmen arriving between 8.30 and 9am and I needed to be back. It is now 9.13 and they’re not here yet.

I took advantage of the gym’s Boditrax system, which I first used 2.5 years ago. It does all the fancy muscle mass, fat mass etc assessment. Virtually no change from then - except for me being 2.5 years older.

I am apparently “solid build”, which means above average muscle alongside above average fat. That’s better than having above average fat alongside normal or low amounts of muscle…… but sadly I’m a lot more above average in the fat than the muscle department.

Oh well, I am where I am. I listened to a fascinating podcast the other day from the people at Zoe - all about different types of exercise and how they affect us. Did you know that VO2 max, leg strength and grip strength are all, independently, strong predictors of both longevity and independence in old age? I didn’t, but I do now.

For VO2 max, there is a point below which it becomes difficult to live independently because you haven’t got enough capacity to walk, climb stairs, do chores etc. For women, that point is about 16 ml/kg/min. My score according to my Apple Watch is currently 20.3. It declines with age. It improves with exercise and (you guessed it) weight loss. But I don’t want to lose muscle mass, or at least, I want to retain sufficient muscle mass that its proportion of my total weight increases.

So: strength training to retain (or even build) muscle
Aerobic and/or HIIT to improve oxygen processing capacity
Healthy eating to promote diminution of internal fat stores.

DQ I meant to say well done on the loss and mostly not letting someone sabotage your goals - my yogi teacher said don’t let someone’s actions affect your mind they won’t even know let alone care. My friend followed up with it’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer (wise words from her counsellor) those words have stick with me ever since.

My friend is a qualified "brain coach" ie she uses neuroscience to help coach people!
apparently a stress reaction lasts just 90 seconds .... anything beyond that is totally US and therefore in our control
I'm very good at brooding and overthinking things!!

DoricQuine well done on your loss, and commiserations for whatever is going on - like GG I don’t know the circumstances, but it sounds stressful.

RevBG - that is interesting about the longevity predictors

I’m down 0.4 kg this week. I’m sure not drinking is helping!

Well done on your loss DQ ..

Weighed myself earlier and I've stayed the same. As last week involved a trip to see my Mum and a stay in a hotel - so limited exercise opportunities - I'll take that.

Stayed up too late last night watching (recorded) tv, so an early-morning walk today was a no-no. Have arranged to go to Croome (NT) with Mrs WM tomorrow for a walk. It will just be an 'amble' rather than a 'ramble' so I may get up early and go for a fast walk by myself. We'll see ..

Off to see my Mum again this coming Thu and will be staying over again. I'll take my gear with me again, with the idea of an early-morning walk before driving home. Have failed top do so twice now - wonder if it will be third-time lucky? ;)

Thanks all and well done losers 👏

I cancelled my early morning gym class after seeing cars struggling to get out of our street, so we wrapped up warm, went for a wee walk and were rewarded with the most fabulous skies 🤗
