My old running shoes always go in the recycling bins at Tesco, I think they're Salvation Army bins/skips.

I wouldn't trust the kerbside collection bags either, used by scammers who sell off the contents for their own pocket.

Likewise there have been rogue collection bins for clothes/shoes deposited by scammers in car parks.

I’ve been at my Mum’s helping sort stuff before some work is done there. I am more ruthless than her, and I think it helps to have someone to help and make decisions about what to keep or get rid of. 8 bags to Oxfam Books and the next nearest charity shop. It’s a good start. I realised today I need to help sort through everything as she wants to do it but feels a bit overwhelmed by it.

Good work .B. I suspect also that your mum appreciates you giving her permission to get rid of stuff.

Yes KK, she feels guilty getting rid of something someone gave her even if she doesn’t like or use it. I’m more “chuck it”

One of my friends explained that the gift-giver has had the pleasure from giving the gift to you. So the gift has done its job and you shouldn’t feel bad about not wanting it or giving it away.

That's a really nice way of thinking of it, thanks Meglet.

I agree. Once I've given a gift it is completely up to the receiver to decide what they would like to do with it.

The big declutter has continued so there space for my partner’s (fiancé’s!) stuff as he moves in.

Today I’ve taken sleeping bags and mugs to the homeless shelter, a large box of ring binders, files, paper and card to the craft recycling place, more kitchen stuff and books to the charity shop.

Need to keep working on OH who is struggling to let go of things of monetary value or unwanted gifts even though no longer useful and taking up space…

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
