GG - I didn't keep the cables because I thought they would 'come in handy'. I think they are cables for pieces of kit that have been dumped and the follow-up job of throwing away the corresponding cables wasn't done. I do have a friend who puts bits of 'come in handy' stuff in his loft much to his partner's annoyance. He also stores 'things' in his garage - the best example was a 'spare' refrigerator in his garage that had three (three!) magnetic thermometers on it. Apparently because they might come in useful if the one indoors ever broke ;)

It's not just leads and power supplies. I've thrown away bits of plastic where I've thought "that looks familiar" but couldn't remember what it was, then discovered it's a vital component of the sewing machine etc.

Mel that friend could almost be my OH! He has the most random of stuff, best was our first house the chap who we bought off left it complete with all furniture he didn’t want, some we utilised, some we disposed of. Fast forward a number and f years when we moved and out of the loft came a manky brown long pile rug and an electric ‘log effect’ plastic 1960’s fire!!!

Not sure what the justification was for putting them in the loft but I swear that’s where the white kettle must have come from!

I'm thankful that we don't have a loft any more, it used to be out of sight out of mind and too easy to keep stuff just in case.

I went up in the loft recently to get the boxes down for packing away the decorations. It's not usually my job so I've not been up there in a while.
Oh my.

I think it's time to get ruthless

I dragged a load of boxes out of the roof in November. Mostly stuff I've inherited and which is time to get rid of. I plan to put it to auction but was told to wait until the end of January. I didn't want to put them back so they've been cluttering the spare bedrooms.

Lofts are evil. They swallow all sorts of things. Strict rules in my new one, only stuff that will be used at least annually. Ski gear, suitcases and Christmas decs.

However it’s already been broken by a small selection of children’s toys and a picture of me, XH and teen 1 when she was 2yo.

I've done a wardrobe sweep. Several skirts and dresses that I'm never going to wear for various reasons (like being shiny brown satin :-O or looking good on the hanger but being a really funny shape on me) are destined for the charity shop and my oldest daughter has relieved me of a few thermal garments, some of them temporarily. I've passed an old jumper of eL Bee!'s to VP, because although it's too bulky for most purposes it'll be a brilliant garment to fling on at the end of a race in winter.

One or two other things are destined to become bike cleaning cloths fairly soon.

Mr took our broken rotary clothes drier to the tip today, and used the occasion to fill the car with other 'stuff' e.g. old pillows, the frame from the last dog crate, several cardboard filing boxes.

I've nearly recovered the floor of the children's bedroom - just the charity shop stuff to go and really, which ought to be this weekend before they all come to stay on Monday.

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
