We regularly sort out books, I only want ones we really want to keep because we might read them again, or ocaasional sentimental attachment ones. K now buys most of his as downloads so we don't add many new ones.

After letting go loads of books when I moved house, and then some more, I buy all my reading books from charity shelves now so donate them back as soon as I've read them. I don't feel that as I've paid so much money I have to keep it any longer.

I am the same with books it’s madness it’s not like there is any need to be sentimental over them just books that I’ve enjoyed reading yet I struggle to give them away! More so if someone has bought me them (it’s this gift thing again)
I do have books I was given as a child things of no use to me at all now (horse / animal books) but my grandma wrote happy birthday/Christmas inside and I am struggling to let go. My neighbours little girl is like I was horse daft and I really want to give them to her but I feel terrible for my grandma..... help!!

I'm sure your neighbour's daughter would love the books. Why not take photos of the messages so you still have them? My Grandma was very pragmatic and gave away loads of stuff to neighbours and other family members if she thought they could use it. (I did not inherit that pragmatism!)
I'm sure yours wouldn't be offended

Is your grandma still with you?
In which case - ask her what she thinks.
If not, I would guess she would be happy for you to donate to someone you know will enjoy them. After all she wouldn't have expected you to keep birthday cards for years would she?
Take a photo of the message inside to keep - or if it doesn't deface the book too much perhaps you could cut it out and keep in a scrap book with a photo of the book cover.
Someone wise once said that a gift was a gift. You had it over for the recipient to have free use of it and if that means they have given you the joy of handing it on to someone else who will enjoy it then that is a gift too.
