I gave husband a tour of The Dales on the way home - it was quite nice pootling along the little roads with the aircon on enjoying the view - Wharfdale was rammed though.

Larkim.. those successful family days are to be celebrated. 😀
I once successfully bribed my then 6 yr old daughter with a packet of fruit pastilles to walk from the southern end of Dovedale to Milldale and back. Parent Skills 😀

We've successfully convinced our (now) 5 yr old that Haribo are "mountain sweets" and as such they only come out if we're walking up something unless it's a really special treat

That sounds like a good way to keep kids from expecting sweets every day.

We met up with family in Hawkshead on Saturday afternoon as it was youngest Grandchilds 2nd birthday on Sunday and they were at Miller Beck Light Railway in the morning.

Had a great time and while the village was busy the park was quiet. Racing round the football pitch with 8yo Grandson & his Dad straight after picnic was probably not a good idea & I didn't log it on my watch!!

Enjoyed a treat from the Little Ice Cream Shop before heading home :-)

I can't really complain about my brood's attitude to walking. My eldest walked up Moel Famau in N Wales when he was 18 months old, and never really looked back. Then the two youngest know no better - the youngest (11) chatters non-stop so no doubt the world flies by when your head is full of Minecraft or Marvel or whatever subject he wants to natter on about. The 14 year old is developing teenage grumpiness, but has discovered that taking photos whilst waiting for the slower members of the party to catch up almost feels like "screen time" so he's content enough and benefits from not having to exert himself much whilst we're walking to the level of the lowest common denominator.

And I must count my blessings as I'm certain that my 4 are still far better and more enthusiastic walkers than the vast majority of kids today.

One of my most prized photos is of Dr S and our two offspring aged something like 3 and 6 (over 20 years ago now!) grinning by the trig point on Carron Crag. Not the highest point in the Lakes, but they thought it was at the time and felt a huge sense of achievement. Bribery/motivation in our case was things like a new rucksack or a Swiss Army knife when they clocked up 25/50/75/100 summits (and that wasn't just Wainwrights, we worked off a longer list with lots of easy wins on it)! I've still got the lists!
