Heather is peaking here in Brontë country, but I don’t think it’s going to be a spectacular year. This week’s outings will confirm either way though

the heather was really lovely on Holme Fell when we were there a couple of days ago. It's not much of a fell but beautiful once you're up amongst the swallows and butterflies.

We had both sides of the July weather in the Lakes when we were up a couple of weeks ago. Tried a very wet and rainy walk from Mungrisdale up the brilliantly named River Glenderamakin then Bannerdale Crags, but weather defeated the spirits of the younger members so we turned around. Didn't see a soul until half way when we saw a couple of groups about 800m away coming off Blencathra.
Then as a contrast had a wonderful walk on the Wednesday in the sun up Haystacks from Gatesgarth. One of those days where everything just works out perfectly - dropped off eldest for his day out running the Tea Round in Keswick, then arrived early enough to get a parking spot in Gatesgarth leaving the eldest with supplies in the car for when he passed the car later. Haystacks was perfect for the kids (youngest 11, though more of a challenge for our 17yo with his DS), and up by the little pond at the top found the perfect spot to picnic in the sun sheltered from the breeze. Marvelled at the waterfalls on Warnscale Beck on the way down and then paddled in the beck when it flattened out. It might not have been swift (I think we took 5 hours for what's about a 5 mile loop!) but the boys felt like they'd been up an mountain and we were all nicely chilled! Then drove back over to Keswick to pick up an exhausted son who'd coverered nearly 30 miles on foot in about 6hr45!
We really should get up more often...

Shame about the first walk larkim - I hope you didn't curse me too much
We had lots of weather last week, leaving in brilliant sunshine on Saturday was hard.
I have a campsite booked for a few days soon, rearranged from the end of June - but am not sure if I can use it or not.

Not at all Rosehip - the weather was diabolical that day anyway, and it was perfect in the sense that we were sheltered all the way up the waterfall anyway, and we were properly kitted out. We'll be back to complete it - it's not a part of the Lakes we'd have gravitated to normally, but it's now firmly on the radar!
We could have made it all the way around even in the rain, and had our 17yo not been with us we probably would have done but his stamina is a bit lacking and it can be soul destroying trying to persuade him along!! Even Haystacks required me to have a long running, distracting conversation with him about his aspirational band (he'd be the lead singer with the members of The Vamps supporting him, and his tour bus would be purple, pink and black just in case you're interested!) until we got to the more scrambly sections where his interest was piqued!!

- he did well My 17 yrd old has suffered from being very sedentary for a couple of years (school work and lockdown and xbox addiction) and has lost all his hiking fitness - we also cut a walk short as his patience with flying ants (and my patience with him playing music out loud from his phone so I could "enjoy it" too) ran out.

We're lucky with him as despite his DS, fitness isn't an issue (relatively speaking). Though we did descend Snowdon last year on the Pyg track at an average pace of over 70 minutes per mile - there's a lot of thinking that has to go into descending chunky rock steps, and when your brain-power is already running at a lower speed than most others (as I like to think of it) his descending pace does feel akin to a PC which is trying to run a virus scan at the same time as process a video file whilst playing Minecraft...
