Ok, suppose it is better than nothing... Considering my outgoings, due to increases in utilith bills, mortgage interest, fuel, food etc has gone up by nearly £500/month! Considering I spent £600/month before, you can see that this is a problem! I am working more now, to cover the rise, but that has only given me a 30% increase in income, so it doesn't cover things...

Everybody keeps saying insulation is the answer but what do you do if you don't have cavity walls and your loft is part of the living space of the house? What or how else can I insulate, bearing in mind I have a very low income so answers like "replace all your windows" or "buy thicker curtains" are out of the question?

I'm terrified and feeling pretty helpless but there must be something with low initial outlay that would help me to not freeze this Winter. Many of the suggestions I've seen are so expensive that if I could afford them I could probably afford to turn my heating on and wash in hot water again!

I feel your pain Kinky! Converted chapel, open plan, pretty much all one room. I will be burning free wood for heat, if I can repair/seal the flu of it and if my old chainsaw ever returns from its service.

I also cannot insulate... Practically it is socks, jumpers, woollen blanket, hot water bottle, one light on at night, wear clothes forever before washing them, repairing everything. A friend is going to help/teach me how to repair clothes as I am useless... I recommend a cat: they are permanent hot water bottles. If you keep their feed down, they will go catch mice, which saves on food too ;)

Doors closed keeping any unused rooms sealed no heating door closed etc
We have cats

I’m not sure how cold they tolerate and they need access to litter box so can’t shut them in one room
Will be getting thicker duvet out this winter and blankets in lounge for us and cats
I’ll be running or cycling to work as much as possible

Batch cooking more too

The typical household energy bill will hit £3,549 a year from October, regulator Ofgem announces
The cap is currently £1,971 for the average household and limits how much providers can charge customers in England, Scotland and Wales
The price of electricity will rise on average from 28p per kWh to 52p in October-December and gas will go up from 7p to 15p per kwh
The new price cap will take effect on 1 October, with many households expected to struggle to pay

Meanwhile, the so-called PM couldn't give a shit and the two prospective replacements are engaged in a pissing competition.

It may seem like a luxury but an electric blanket costs pennies to run and can make a completely unheated bedroom pretty comfortable.
