Until the latest rises, yes, reduces their admin costs and defaulters.
Also tends to lock people in, as they don't have to do anything to stay as is.

Last month I had a £1000 back from Eon and monthly bill reduced by £35 as we had been overcharged since they took over from Power. I'm still in credit by £300 and on a fixed tariff for another year so expecting winter bills will not put us into debit. I feel very fortunate when I hear how expensive and worrying winter fuel bills will be for many.

Some suppliers offer variable direct debit so you get charged for what you use but you have to submit readings

I built up a buffer of £258 paying £155 DD per month (gas + elec). They put my DD up to £177, which was annoying with that level of buffer.

Just submitted meter readings and now £323 Cr.

Guess I'll have about £550 by the time the clocks go back which could be handy when the tsunami hits, so leaving it as is, but if they try and raise the DD again I'll be on the warpath....

DD also means that the supplier has a pseudo-charge against your bank balance, which puts them ahead of, say, those other bills and payments which you may be juggling to stay ahead of the debt collector. They love DDs, in other words, because it gets them one step ahead of the pack.

I am also struck struck by how we all have always known EXACTLY the cost of fuel/litre, but I suspect like many I am only just starting to get a grip of the unit rates for gas and elec - which I just sort of ignored previously.

I used to be the same TRO but I now do monthly readings and watch my bill and offers of a fix like a hawk.

We have now got a £700 credit bit looks like we will need every penny of that.

The fix I am being offered is almost double the level I pay now and which in the low usage period is overpaying by about £100 per month.

I do regret not taking one of the fixed a while ago but at the time it looked a silly amount to pay.

I'm all electric, and on a fix until 3/10.

I'm deliberately currently over-paying based on my usage, and based on last year's usage then by 3/10 I should be about £600 in credit, then there's the £400 govt amount, so effectively will be £1000 in credit when I come to look at a new contract - hoping that means the monthly amount doesn't need to rise by too much.

Also taken down a couple of decent size trees in my garden and got them all chopped up and drtying out, so free fuel - may turn the radiators down a degree or so and use the log-burner more than normal.

Worrying times though.

Saw something on Sky about amount of govt support in various Euro countries.

The UK govt, with it's £400 per household, and £1000 for some households will be spending around £15bn, some of the other European countries are spending a lot more (Germany 60bn Euro, Italy 50bn Euro, France 45bn Euro). It does sound like the UK will put more in, both Truss and Sunak have hinted that, but because of the limbo we are in then will need to wait until a new PM is announced.

We’ve had word from our energy company that our direct debit from April onwards will be double the current amount. How’s everyone else fared?
