We were asked to pay a silly amount monthly so I went to paying on invoice - I now put the difference between our bill and what they wanted us to pay into a savings account for the winter months

Just done my month end meter readings and added about another £160 credit. Leaves me wondering what to do as I am a healthy amount in credit and wary of them having my money. But with the further increase to come and the higher usage over winter, I like the cushion I have. I could ask for my credit back and put it aside should I need it. |

I think that as long as you know you’re disciplined enough not to spend it, you should ask for it back.

Q. Because I don't understand this. Why does everywhere say it's cheaper to pay by monthly direct debit than on the reciept of the bills? I get that it smooths cost over the year (although i've had real issues in the past with them overcharging me), but surely the actual price for the energy is the same? It's the same tarriff... |

Just guessing, but do the suppliers give a favourable rate for DD because it means you are less likely to default?

Isn’t it the direct debit bit that’s the key? I think you can pay direct debit on actual bills as long as you submit readings, but if you don’t want to pay by direct debit at all then it’s not the same tariff. I think.

Ah I see. So because I already pay by direct debit, it doesn't matter.

Fewer overheads in chasing unpaid bills, the ability to increase the amount relatively easily, and the helpful inertia of automation.
