We have a Nest thermostat which is generally set to 20 degrees. Since we left home two days ago the youth has had it set to 16. Boiler usage has fallen by two thirds.

Don't know if this is useful for peeps - particularly those with combi boilers. Many people have their boilers set to their factory default temperatures. This 'flow temperature' may be way too high for your needs and is likely to be an inefficient way of using your boiler. By turning down both the heating and water dials, you could improve efficiency and save costs. theheatinghub.co.uk Video explaining the same: |

I’ve not had heating on for 5 weeks. Even when I had a boiler it was only on at 18.

Just for clarity - a boiler 'flow temperature' isn't the same as a thermostat. Consider it like: The flow temperature controls the input temp, whereas a thermostat controls the output. |

I had my March bill and shock horror: in stead of £64 it was £486 😱 I literally got palpitations! As I am still on a fixed tarriff til 29 May!!! But after speaking to someone at SO it transpires to be the consumption of builders with their powertools, a dehumidifier and electric fan heater, drying out my new building and keeping it warm ish for months without glass panels or doors. I had inadvertently not given them a reading since 5 December. They kindly calculated that I will be going for £64 to £104... So not too bad, all things considered. Also: give your meter readings monthly! So your provider can be accurate... I felt like a total muppet! |

Hanneke - a bill like that is enough to give anyone a heart attack. At least it's sorted and you know why it was so much. My energy provider email me once a month for the meter reading, submitted readings today. I'm only in credit £4 now so am expecting a sizeable increase in my DD. |

Shades, I get a monthly reminder too but I have been overwhelmed by the building work! It won't happen again...

just got the email from Shell - your DD needs to increase from £34 to £108!! I think the main issue was I was transferred from Pure Planet, they then messed up DD transfer so didn't take money one month and the £34 was based on Pure Planet's fixed rate. This has meant that I'm now in debit with them so that's partly to pay that off. Annoyingly, I can't increase my DD by too much (to pay off quicker) as I would then be in too much credit! I would much rather build up credit now (when I am likely to be using less heating etc)

JenHB - I'm with Shell too. I'm only £4 in credit now but they haven't requested increase in my DD, which I need to do at the new prices. I'd like to build up a credit before next winter and the next price hike. I think you can go onto Shell's website and set up your own DD so maybe not have to increase your DD to the figure they have suggested. |
