I had wondered in the past whether it was a captaincy hand-me-down from Alastair Cook, or something like that - his jumper has always been too big.

I noticed a few of the England players using their jumpers to polish the ball. This is OK by the current laws* but I did wonder if wool was likely to be more abrasive than whatever their trousers are made from. * A fielder may, however 41.3.2.1 polish the ball on his/her clothing provided that no artificial substance is used, that the only natural substance used is sweat, and that such polishing wastes no time. |
