Question to anyone in the know! We are currently outside the UK but in Europe and our local pharmacy has offered us covid (and flu) jabs. I know different flu vaccines are used each year depending on the strains that are active - has that level of tailoring spread to covid vaccines yet? Is it done on a Europe-wide basis or does each country specify which “bits” they want? My UK GP keeps reminding me to get them both. Should I have both?

um
macca - I'm not an expert, but the current 3 UK ones are

Moderna (Spikevax) COVID-19 vaccine on GOV.UK

Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty) COVID-19 vaccine on GOV.UK

Sanofi and GSK (VidPrevtyn Beta) COVID-19 vaccine on GOV.UK

See gov.uk

The Eu seems to have a wider pool of 8 - see commission.europa.eu

But, from what I read (and again, I emphasize I'm not an expert), it looks like the manufacturers are releasing WW versions, not tuning by country.
The only way will be to find out
1) if you can choose
2) what will you be given

Then compare the lists and version numbers/codes.

Note para 4 in the UK JCVI statement : Where substantial delays might be incurred in deploying the latest UK-approved COVID-19 vaccine by December, the principle of timeliness should take priority over the choice of vaccine.

As for flu - there seem to be 2 variants. Northern hemisphere and southern : nibsc.org

Thanks um, that feels like J could have the flu jab anywhere (I guess having two shots of the same vaccine wouldn’t be worthwhile?). I’ll have the covid jab locally on Tuesday and see what vaccine I’m given (it seems about half of the jabs bought are Pfizer/Biontec).
