I thought a few days ago the thought was full lockdown wasn’t the best move?

"Home Secretary Priti Patel has said the government can rule nothing out when it comes to coronavirus restrictions - including a national lockdown. Asked if she would rule out another national lockdown, she said: "I think at this stage of course we can rule nothing out because we are a government that is focused on making sure that we stop the spread of this virus, and also we protect public health. "So we have been using, and we are using, and we will continue to use, every single means available to us to do exactly that."" BBC |

"Full" lockdown (for some definition of full) is the only move if we want to seriously suppress the epidemic. Whether we want to do that or not is another matter. What's the worst that will happen with another 2 doublings? That'll more or less see us to the peak.

@GG - It depends on your perspective. I know many didn't appreciate what the former Pret owner was saying, but there is a reality (one that I don't want to be part of) which says that letting an amount of people die because it costs less in the long term is a "good idea". It's nowhere near as simple as that of course because health services could get utterly overwhelmed beyond just dealing with those "allowed to die" under that sort of approach, and there is also basic humanity standards (doh!). But somewhere between full lockdown and simply allowing the virus to run through is the sweet spot. Whatever we might want to tell ourselves, the absence of a full lockdown is a strategy which will cause death, in the same way that allowing smoking does. It's just about finding the acceptable balance. |

Non-runner
I honestly don’t think a “full lockdown” would be observed by a significant minority. There is a substantial number simply not moved by the “you will kill your granny” messages, especially as they know that 99% survive Covid and that usually around 1,500 people die every day in the UK and there is no weeping and wailing for them. Sorry if that sounds harsh but I think, from what I see around me and read on comment boards, that resistance is hardening. If it were to be a time-limited final lockdown, with guaranteed no more in the pipeline, it might help persuade those people, but it won’t be, and once it is released, here we are again. This virus is incompatible with our entire way of life, there seems to be no nice way out. I am so depressed with it all.

very nice, DocM. Pity about the disclaimer at the bottom, of course.
